Half barrel planter
This past weekend's project was half barrel planters. They are not your typical "cut a barrel in half" that you can get anywhere. I cut the barrels lengthwise. First I had to secure the bands to the barrel itself. That involved lots of screws and drilling. Then each metal band had to be cut on opposite sides. I painted the bands black and stained the barrel with an oil base stain for some protection. I drilled a few holes on the bottom for drainage. I used a couple of barrel staves for the stand so they won't rock. I put some plants in one of them.

Made a couple different things these past couple weeks. Tried my hand at two things I'e never done before. The first project was a set of bamboo wind chimes. Love em! Think they came out rather nice. Much better than the factory mass produced ones. :)
The second was turning an old gourd a friend gave me into a birdhouse. I donated that to a silent auction to help raise funds for a local family who just lost 3 of their 5 children in a vehicle accident. Very sad. Hopefully it found a great home.
I enjoyed working with the gourd though. It was fun. Can't wait to do it again.

Game pieces will soon be available
Somebody had asked me if we sell game pieces. We don't but I think that was a wonderful idea so I looked into it. I ordered in some plain wooden pieces so they can be customized to whatever color you want. Who ever said that checkers had to be black and red? I also have ordered some parcheesi game pieces also. So when they come in, I will start playing around with them. The checker set is 2 colors, 12 pieces in each color. The Backgammon set is 2 colors, 15 pieces in each color. The Parcheesi set is 4 colors with 4 pieces in each set.

Back to Crafting
Well, I quit smoking 2 weeks ago and it took me a bit to be able to head out to the the shed and make stuff without smoking! I just haven't been in the mood.
It was a nutso week at work so I really needed some tool time, ha. So, I'm back to playing outside. Have tootsie rolls to keep me happy. Started making windchimes out of bamboo this weekend, mostly because catching bamboo on fire with the dremel is kind of fun. :)

Next project - Bar
I finished the dog house and have posted a picture of it in the photo album. Molly does'nt know what to make of it yet. She is not so good with new things. It took me forever to get her to use the doggie door.

Project of the day - Parcheesi top and dog house
I recently got a stencil for a Parcheesi board and I could not wait to try it out. I painted a Parcheesi board today on a table round. I used a thinner poster paint and painted the board on the unfinished wood. Then I stained over the paint. It gave an aged look to the paint. I like it personally. I also painted a Backgammon board on the other side of the table round. So this table I am making is one of the taller, thinner barrels. The bands are painted black and it will have a reversible top with Backgammon on one side and Parcheesi on the other.

How it started for me
One day I was looking at a catalog and saw a really cool table made from a wine barrel. I had been wanting a table for the front porch and this one seemed perfect except that it was $900. Too much. Since I consider myself to be handy with power tools and I had a picture to use as a guideline, I decided that I could make it myself, so I did. Since I am an avid backgammon player, I decided to paint a backgammon board on it. Heather gave me the idea to cut a hole in the center for an ice bucket. So, Friday nights you can find us on the front porch playing backgammon and having a few beers.

Need therapy much??
Hi! I’m Heather. I was told I had to blog, never blogged in my life so…here goes. I started tinkering with fountains because my job is rather stressful at times. I’ve been a 911 dispatcher for almost a year and a half and sometimes it gets a little nerve racking. Rarely do you talk to “happy” people; and being a happy person in general, that was bringing me, my loved ones, and well…even my cat down.
